Joe Derrel Herd

October 19, 1926 — April 22, 2014

Joe Derrel Herd, Sr., passed away Tuesday, April 22, 2014 in his home after a long illness. He was born October 19, 1926 in Chadwick, the son of Joseph and Meta (Brown) Herd. He was united in marriage to Lois Leona Schweppe. He served his country in the U.S. Navy during World War II. Joe was a farmer who loved his work. He plowed his fields and gardens with horses and mules in the past, and enjoyed his John Deere tractor, and checking his cattle on his 4-wheeler and John Deere gator. He was a Christian and a faithful member throughout his life of the Chadwick Union Church, the New Hope Baptist Church and the Ozark General Baptist Church. He was a member of American Legion Post #676. Joe loved each family member and cherished time spent with them. Survivors include: His wife of 67 years, Lois; four children and their spouses, Joe Derrel Herd, Jr. and Kathy, John Albert Herd and Gloria, Danny Herd and Brenda, and Andrea Smith and Melvin, all of Chadwick; fifteen grandchildren, Michael Herd and wife Verna, Jeff Herd and Caroline, Melissa Daugherty and Curtis, Sherry Strong, Lisa Walker and Micky, Tara Herd, Christy Lewis and Ben, Lacey Loring and Garrett, Amber Hyde and Brenton, Josh Herd, Brady Herd and Paige, Jessi Rains and Chase, Libby Smith, Jerica Herd, and Gavin Herd; many great-grandchildren and great-great-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by a brother, Carol Dean Herd, a sister, Marynel Watts, and his parents. A graveside funeral will be 1:00 PM Friday, April 25, in Chadwick Memorial Cemetery, Pastor Don Potter officiating, with full military honors. Visitation will be from 6:00 - 8:00 PM Thursday in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark.
