Mary Jo Burkhart

Mary Jo (Smith) Burkhart, age 74, formerly of Chadwick, Missouri, passed away Monday, June 16, 2014, in Mercy Villa, Springfield. She was born January 9, 1940, in Christian County, the daughter of Beulah Mae (Braden) Smith and Lawrence L. "Dink" Smith. On August 9, 1958, she and Carol Dean Burkhart were united in marriage. Two daughters were born to this union, Carolyn and Cherlyn. Mary Jo worked several jobs throughout her life. Most recently she was employed by the Chadwick School System. She was saved at an early age and was a member of First Baptist Church of Chadwick. Mary Jo was a people person. She was involved in many events and organizations in her community. She also loved to be outdoors enjoying nature. She was preceded in death by: Her parents, Dink and Beulah; her husband Carol; a granddaughter, Kara Lynn Cantrell; parents-in-law, Basil and Blanch Burkhart: brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Bob and Eula Mae Burkhart, Bill and Wilma Jo Burkhart, Mary Nell Burkhart, Noel Holt, Don Harrell, and Larry Burkhart; a niece Diane Holt; and nephew Bruce Burkhart. She is survived by two daughters and their husbands, Carolyn and Dave Cantrell of Springfield, and Cherlyn and Greg Miller of Ozark; granddaughters, Carlie Cantrell of Junction City, Kansas, and Hollie Cantrell of Springfield; a grandson James of Ozark; two sisters, Dorothy Harrell of Springfield, and Helen Monger and husband Mike of Phillipsburg, Missouri; an aunt, Ivy Rodgers; sisters-in-law Delores Miller and husband Harold of Chadwick and Sue Burkhart of Chadwick; and many other relatives and dear friends both in Missouri and throughout the country. Mary Jo's family would like to extend a special thank you to the staff at Mercy Villa for the compassionate care given to their mother and grandmother during the past few years. Funeral services will be 2:00 PM Friday, June 20, in Adams Funeral Home, Ozark, with Chaplain Ann Payette officiating. Burial will follow in Chadwick Memorial Cemetery. Visitation will be 5:30 - 7:30 PM on Thursday in the funeral home. Memorial donations may be made to the Chadwick School Foundation.
