Carla Eliza Galloway

September 10, 1925 — September 7, 2018

Born in Singkep, Indonesia, Carla Eliza Galloway's life path took her across the world to Springfield, MO, where she found its loving end at nearly 93 years old. Born of Dutch physician, Johannes Carel Plug and his wife and nurse, Mevrouw Hubertine Plug-van Schendel, Carla moved from Indonesia to Lausanne, then Amsterdam, The Hague and Paris. In Paris she worked in the Dutch Section of NATO. There, she met the love of her life, then Major William Howard Galloway, on a blind date. Following his transfer away, he telegraphed his proposal. Her life's journey took her to Sioux Falls Iowa, Washington D.C., a Ranger Camp in U.P. Michigan, Milwaukee and Springfield, MO. Known as caring and quietly sophisticated, she served as a willful and cultured leader of several area womens groups. In the 1980's she protested the proposed destruction of the Sorosis Club House, a historic building on Walnut Street, now an MSU art gallery. A member of the Unitarian Church, she cared deeply about social issues, listening to talks through her 90's. Mostly, her friends and admirers found her ubiquitous to all things cultural, theatrical and musical. She dearly loved classical musical performances. She supported the Springfield Symphony, and helped found the Springfield Regional Opera. Opera remained her penultimate joy throughout her life. She loved her husband, Lt. Col. William Howard Galloway, who predeceased her; her only son, Bruce Howard Galloway, Ozark, MO, who survives her; and her relatives, friends and admirers, in the U.S. and in Europe. She passed away peacefully, mid conversation, and laid back on her bed. A memorial service will be held at 11:00 AM Friday, September 14, 2018 at Adams Funeral Home, Ozark. Burial will be at 2:00 PM Friday, September 14 at Missouri Veterans Cemetery, Springfield. A reception will be held from noon-1:30 PM immediately following the memorial service in the funeral home.
